Prerequisites

The following are the prerequisites for participation in the MusicBreeds program and will be evaluated through recommendations from teachers, administrators, and other stakeholders:

  • Currently 11th or 12th grade high school student at participating school locations

  • Appropriate academic achievement and attendance in school

  • Demonstrates ability on at least one instrument (voice, piano, guitar, computer, etc.)

  • Experience with songwriting in any genre

  • Desire to pursue music at the collegiate and/or professional level

Program Outcomes

  • Create, record, and produce an original song

  • Realise and build an artistic brand to reflect personal musical ambitions

  • Present effectively to industry professionals for career development

MusicBreeds provides access to life skills, training, and resources to young musicians that can enhance their creative capacity, improve their level of self-awareness, sharpen their financial literacy, and promote their holistic self-development.

About the program


Industry Engagement

During the course of the program, students will benefit through direct interaction and support from music industry professionals. These engagements will range from guest speaking to hands-on personal coaching.



Skill Development

In addition to providing students with the opportunity to develop high-level understanding and abilities in music, the MusicBreeds curriculum enables students to learn business and interpersonal tools that will ultimately foster each student’s musical development as well as college and career readiness.



Standards

While the MusicBreeds program does not specifically embrace any one particular set of standards, it aligns with many different standards for general and music education including:

  • National Core Arts Standards
  • NYC Blueprint for the Arts: Music
  • Common Core Standards


In particular, the MusicBreeds program shares many characteristics and goals of the National Core Arts Standards for Music Education, such as:

  • Process-focused learning
  • Embracing the creative process as essential for learning
  • Developing “real world” music skills
  • Working in and through four main artistic processes: Creating, Performing, Responding, and Connecting
